I think the Swiss may actually at least partially back their currency with gold (I'm not 100% positive about this).
That would be neat. It uses to have partial backing but they took that away and gave in to the evils of fiat. Even so the Swiss Franc is still a "flight to safety" currency as often so is the yen, and if they bring back at least partial gold backing the swiss franc would only strengthen its reputation as a "rock solid" currency.

I keep hearing about Ameros and other regional currencies. There's a rumor of an Asia-wide currency, but that won't happen anytime soon. The Chinese still HATE the Japanese for the "Anti-Japanese War" (we call it World War II). After 10 years back under Chinese control, Hong Kong still has it's own currency. Macau also has it's own currency. If China won't work with Japan on this and doesn't even have a single currency for all of its own territory, there's a probability of a pan-Asian currency somewhere in the vicinity of zero percent anytime soon.

Yep I agree with you. I don't foresee Japan and China co-operating anytime soon.

I could picture a US/Canada/Mexican currency, but they'd never just call it the Amero. The US loves the name dollar too much, as do the Canadians. Amero Dollars, North American Dollars, or something like that would be possible.

Yep, we're all so used to that term that we'd be hard pressed to give it up. Amero sounds funny.

Alternatively, the US could just annex Canada and Mexico and keep using the US dollar. I'm sure we'd set up some generous way for Candians to exchange their dollars for US dollars after this happens. Maybe CAD10 buys USD1? :-)
(I give Alan about 2 seconds to hit the ceiling after reading that last paragraph.)

lool..2 seconds...it only took 1 nanosecond..
I think most likely it will be the other way around if the US economy dives deeper into recession.
Time to keep a close eye on the NFP tomorrow.
